Hotel Inspector in Birmingham, UK

Location:
Birmingham, UK
Experience required:
Previous experience is not essential
Relevant industries:
Leisure, Travel & Tourism; Hospitality; Photography; Writing and Editing
Functions:
Writing / Editing; Analyst; Production; Art / Creative; Quality Assurance
Salary:
£50 daily, plus expenses; 1 day of work per month

Pick any Birmingham hotel from this link: http://www.laterooms.com/en/p2842/k16280256_birmingham-hotels.aspx

BWDP will pay for:

  • the price of 1 night's accommodation in your chosen hotel;
  • plus £10 towards miscellaneous expenses (such as travel, refreshments, stationery, getting photos developed...etc);
  • plus £50 for your day's work.

You are responsible for managing your own time in a sessional, freelance manner.

Your job is to be a normal customer in the hotel. To take some good photographs (50+ photos; mainly of the room you stay in, and a few from outside of the building). Each picture will need 20+ words of corresponding, unique, descriptive text. And to write a brief report of your experience in the hotel (300+ words).

As a LateRooms affiliate, BWDP will eventually edit your words and pictures before publishing them online, on any number of websites, to help sell hotel bookings. But your job is simply to take lots of exclusive photographs and to write lots of descriptive sentences; and to submit the report & photos either in digital format (by disk or email) or in paper format (ready to be typed up & scanned in).

There's no strict criteria. Perfect spelling & grammar is not essential because work will be edited before being published. But the more interesting your words & pictures would be, to a potential future visitor to the hotel, the better.

This work is available only on a casual basis, for no more than one day per month, and at no more than £50 salary per working day. But there may be opportunities for increased pay, increased workload and increased responsibility in future; depending on how comfortably you handle your duties as Hotel Inspector.

Practical skills required

  • The ability to take lots of clear photographs.
  • The ability to write descriptive sentences.
  • Patience to keep taking more photographs and writing more words, even when things get boring.

Further information

For a career in the media industry

If you're looking to start a career in the media industry, this sort of work is ideal. Working as a Hotel Inspector for BWDP involves lots of photography as well as lots of descriptive writing, with a view for publishing it all online. A great stepping-stone towards further media-industry related work.

For a flexibile work pattern

It's never been easier to work part-time, in the UK's Second City – Birmingham. This job is very flexible, and can easily be accomplished on weekends, or during summer holiday periods if you're a student.

The Hotel Inspector job vacancy involves work which can be done during evenings, to suit most flexible timetables. This job involves working on a night of your choice; or at least working before and after a given night, and involves exchanging a regular night-time at home for a night in any LateRooms-affiliated, Birmingham-based hotel. You don't strictly even have to stay in the hotel overnight, so long as you can book a room, have a wander around, check in one evening and out the follow morning, and get all the photography and writing done in due course.

This job vacancy involves temporary, ongoing work; on a sessional, as-is basis. It's just casual, non-contractual work; whereby the successful candidate will be freelancing as a self-representing entity, to satisfy any applicable legal obligations (such as tax-returns).

On-Film Trainee Martial Artist & Choreography Assistant

Location:
Birmingham, UK
Experience required:
Previous experience is not essential
Relevant industries:
Education Management; Entertainment; Military; Motion Pictures & Film; Performing Arts
Functions:
Education; Production; Science; Training
Salary:
£40; one-time, hour-long session

If you want to learn the world's finest empty-handed combat techniques, passed down directly from the peak of the original Shaolin temple in South China; and if you want to get paid for the privilege too, then this is the career opportunity for you.

Initially just a one-off session, lasting one hour, for which you will be paid £40, cash in hand. If all goes well, there could be further opportunities available in future.

You will be required to turn up at the filming studio on the day; in regular & flexible but non-offensive clothing; ready to be filmed for the entire hour.

The aim of the session will be partially to film an absolute beginner learning key martial arts techniques from scratch; and partially to choreograph a specific, short sequence of pre-set movements.

Dead simple. Just natural movements. You don't have to lean or stretch. There will be no hard hitting. Just a few stumbles and maybe the odd, accidental scratch from the teacher's fingernails.

Schedule

Just 1 hour in total, from start to finish. In the first 5 minutes, you will learn how to confidently block a fast, straight punch. Then you will learn how to counter-attack in the most efficient & non-brutal manner. Then you will learn how to counter the counter-attack. Then you will learn what to do when this is done on you. There will be five moves from each side in total, to complete the sequence of key movements. This should occupy the first half-hour.

After the sequence has been filmed, at each stage; there will be some blind-folded lessons for the remaining half-hour. Before the hour is up, you'll be able to block mid-speed, random punching combinations when blindfolded. And depending on how well you get on, you may be filmed performing the pre-set sequence of key movements, in a realistic, self-defence scenario at natural speed, under blindfold; just to exemplify how quickly and easily this martial art can be learnt.

Benefits for you

This opportunity will take just an hour of your time, on a one-off occassion; with potential for further work in future. It can enhanse your CV and boost your career prospects, in case you're looking to work in the acting & filming industry. Ideal for aspiring movie stars, and generally useful to help start-up any career in the media industry. A bonus if you're keen on health & fitness, and ideal if you're also interested in learning martial arts.

The teacher usually charges £1000 per hour for private tuition in the UK, but will charge you nothing to train on camera. You will be paid £40 for your time. The film of the session will be cut and compiled to create a useful training & promotional video; which will be published on websites and featured on YouTube, and could generate enough interest to warrant further filming opportunities in future.
